Types of Oboe Reeds (French and American)?

I just started learning the oboe by myself. I started with an American-type medium soft reed and I do not have much trouble getting a sound out (although it’s difficult to get a good pitch). I have a lot of the reed in my mouth as I find I get a more stable tone and it’s more stronger that way. I bought some French-style reeds (med soft) and I almost cannot get any sound out of it!! I have to blow really hard (I feel my face and lungs are going to explode) and I have the reed only slightly in my mouth (just enough so I can tongue). Is there a big difference in difficulty between the types of reeds (and positioning in mouth)? Or did I just buy some duds?? The tone is much nicer on these French reeds but the problem is getting the thing to sound. I think the extremely short scrape is causing me problems.

I personally think American reeds give a better tone. Instead of putting so much reed in your mouth try a harder reed, but a looser embouchure and much less reed. Support from your stomach and you should get a decent tone.
