What is the best brand of GPS on the market? Don’t care about features like mp3 players. Navigation is key.

I want the best navigation tools. I don’t care about the useless features that are available in so many units. I have several mp3 players. I have xm radio. I just need a great GPS that gets me where I want to go. I don’t mind a few extras if the navigation part is good. There are so many brands out there. I need some help deciding on the one to buy.

If you place highest value on traffic directions, I think Garmin is the way to go. It picks better routes (more convenient and faster). Directions are more detailed. It tells you if the destination address is on the left or right side of the road. That matters less if you are on a small street with two houses, but in an unfamiliar busy area, with a wide divided road, after dark, it’s useful to know which side of the road.

TomTom has nice features, but for navigation, it often gets you approximately there, and then you have to look yourself. Magellan is more similar to Garmin in this respect, but I find their designs a little “clunky.”

Test a few addresses at a store on the different models. If you are at home, try yahoo maps. That’s roughly what Garmin and Magellan give you. TomTom gives you the turn-by-turn steps, but not much more.

One other thing you might consider is “text-to-speech,” or having the GPS tell you street names (in a computer voice, but good enough). Instead of “turn right in 200 ft,” you’ll get “turn right on ABC Street in 200 ft”.

On the Garmin nuvi line, basic navigation is the same on all models. The nuvi 200 is the lowest model, and it does not include maps of Canada and Alaska. The 260 is the lowest you can buy with text-to-speech, and has maps of North America. Both don’t come with an AC adapter or USB cable, which I think many will want and have to buy separately, which is a hassle that Garmin could have avoided. The 300 series provides those things, but for more money also have other features that you probably don’t want.
